The Tramps Disco Inferno

Tramps
  1. Burn Baby Burn Disco Inferno

Led by MFSB drummer Earl Young, Philly soul band the Trammps had their biggest breakthrough with 'Disco Inferno' on the mega-selling Saturday Night Fever movie soundtrack. Written by MFSB keyboardist Ron Kersey, the track was a disco hit, earning airplay on disco- and soul-formatted radio stations before it was included on the groundbreaking multi-artist soundtrack. 'Disco Inferno' has several things working for it: the arresting, nonstop groove; Jimmy Ellis' preacher-like lead vocals; and the co-opting of the black nationalist phrase 'burn baby burn' transformed into a rallying cry to 'par-tay.' 'Disco Inferno' blazed its way to number nine R&B and number 11 pop. The Disco Inferno LP went gold, peaking at number 16 R&B and number 46 pop.

Disco

During the '90s, 'Disco Inferno' was licensed for numerous TV ad campaigns, including one for Amoco. As proof of its timeless party-song pedigree, Young and the Trammps were still performing the song all over the world as the 21st century began.
