Well, today was another downward spiral in the field of hopeless endeavor, seeking answers for the great white plastic box of garbage that is supplied to all OPTUS customers. Thus mainly known as Sagemcom F@ST 3864.A list of problems longer than your arm can be found in these forums and yet nobody can see the simple solution. Today I spoke with the high level tech support people as I wanted an answer about the parental control function. After some time going back and forth, the agent then sought his supervisors help.

This finally came back in a three part answer.1) go to the manufacturer and get a manual. Haha I said, they wont do this, they referred me to OPTUS, who pushed me to the various levels of tech support. (Hmm 360 deg circle here)2) Buy a router and then utilize the WiFi functions of that and it can resolve my issues, and finally the joke answer3) Google the modem and maybe there will be a youtube clip on how to set it up.Now, I am no prophet, but I'm sure there may be a youtube clip, but it will involve a sagemcom fast and and even faster 7.62 NATO round very shortly. We'll see how bloody fast it is.I have read many replies in here from what I can only assume are people who are employed by OPTUS and while I appreciate that they endeavour to help us as much as they can, I see that they also use the famous one liner that I have received on the phone today, that being,'we do not support these advanced functions'.For crying out loud people, we are in the 21st century and going backwards as fast as you can take us. This pile of garbage does not allow us to access anything, your reasoning is so your tech support can have a basic working knowledge of it. Well that's just not true, they can't do anything with it. Telling people to go out and buy a router to use so that they can have WiFi at 2.4 and 5ghz with a range further than 1.5 meters after supplying them with a junk box is as ridiculous as it is in its redundancy.
Colin mcrae rally ps1. You are already advocating this to many people and I for one do not want to have a multitude of plugs and power supplies coming out of the damn wall. Currently it's three, NBN unit, OPTUS p.o.s modem / router and home phone.
On the 'professional' advice given, I will need to have a fourth power supply unit for the advised router I should purchase. Nothing like stacking up the power board is there.? We all have houses with plenty of power sockets free right where the NBN box and modem / router are situated, Right.?
Well not here.!If I had been given the opportunity to use my own hardware, I would have had a far superior dual band VOIP NBN capable unit. Instead, I was told I could not have the SIP details because of some scam whereby the details of one customer had been used to make calls to an incredible amount, I was told in the vicinity of ten thousand upwards.Whether true or not is irrelevant as I believe that any inconsistencies in a persons accounts would ring bells somewhere.

Personally I think it is just another story that comes from the back of a male cow.By now you may think I am just a raving and ranting lunatic, you may be right, I have papers to prove this. I served in the military (Army) for 29 years, I now suffer from PTSD and I have damage to my spine in the form of spinal compression. Yes, I do get pretty wound up about things when it all turns to crap around me these days, especially when there is no need for it to be like this. There are no bullets or explosive devices here but the stressors of a useless piece of equipment, cause exactly the same frustration and anger. So, make it go away, OPTUS, get off your high and mighty horse and do the right thing. Help us to get our Internet control back and our right to choose what we se as hardware.
Hey Arctos, apart from your reply, it feels quite lacking in the usual confidence of the company policy in hereI am currently writing a rather huge submission to one of Australia's leading computer and technical magazines. They are very interested in NBN issues at the moment, predominantly speed perfoance against the sales hype. (bang for buck) Also the equipment issued to the end users and at what standards we receive in Australia. I am considering donating my Sagemcom before execution to them for autopsy LOL I emailed them a breif outline of the issues and they are very interested in all aspects, but kindly refused my offer of the Sagemcom. I have enough printed staements of the standard official line statement about advenced technology for basic operation etc and refusing us access to simple information to setup up our own hardware, including VOIP. They think this might actually have some weight in it for breaching customers rights somehow.We will see after they read all the information provided and what they get from the company if they think it is a possible chance of talking with them about fairness and rights of the consumer.Fingers crossed. I wish you well with the magazine article.Optus will not do very much in the way of changing the setup of the Sagecom so the user can use the extra stuff.My previous modem / router a NetComm NV16, I had a 3G dongle in on of the two USB ports and a 1TB external hardive plugged into the other.
When you plugged a drive in it automaticcally set up a NAS which you access on the network.You could change the voice codecs on it as well,Where's the VOIP page on the Sagecom - Optus, so I can change the codec to the best one. Fancy that Marshy, you are all over the place in here too seeking wisdom and clarity on the S3864F@ST (P.O.S) Well mate you will find that you can cover a lot of ground and still only be marginally wiser There is one item I tried and the only thing it did do was make logging in to the modem almost impossible without a reset. That is the one in the WIKI about IP settings, so be wary of that if you get around to reading and trying it. I think those of us who have been going down a path of performance, security and quality have either acheived it and left or alternatively upgraded to the newer AC version and for now settled with that.
Not to say the ultimate plan is given up, but for now some of those life moments have taken a higher priority and this one is on the lower level. The AC version does have some benefits, but it is limited in the number of wifi users (16) it can handle, but I can keep my phone.

Writing), but I thought that towards the end of last year in one of the many topics I was trolling about in, a moderator had said that they, meaning OPTIONLESS would take some notice of what we had to say about the situation regarding modem / router. I mean, how damn hard can it really be.?????????Other ISP's have cracked this issue, and they are not afraid to give their customers the SIP codes. The rumoured scuttle that OPTUS was going to use the UNI-V port for phone and UNI-D port for data was the greatest news I had ever heard, then they got the AC version of the sagemcom and for some reason, at this time I was informed this idea was down the 'excrement chute'. Having gone through many blackouts, or should that be the other way around now, having now had some days with power, here in SA, the idea of being able to have a home phone separate to the VOIP system is very appealing.
Battery backup when the power is out, I can still make a phone call when I need to. If my health deteriorates and I need to have this capability, I can only go to Telstra.
A company that I loathe and detest so much.All my friends here are stuck on Telstra contracts at the moment and they average 1-2 outages per week, with some being offline for four weeks straight. We have had up to 38 interstate techs here at one time to help resolve the faults since the big black last October and it is still going. In that time my OPTUS account has only stopped when the power has. So, why oh why don't they pull their collective heads out of their collective anal orifices and make it better.Tell us WHY, they cannot use UNI-V and UNI-D as seperate entities for the services, not just NO.The real reason they wont give us the SIP code so we can configure our own more powerful and suitable modem/router, not a bull story.Why they continue to use only the one brand of cheap as P.O.S. NBN modem/router, when clearly they could investigate a couple of well known options and even run a survey for input of the choices they have.As I said before, if people want a better box and know it is better, they would probably be willing to pay for it. If not, those who don't can continue to have the standard issue sagemcom at no charge or what ever it is.
