You will receive instruction in cosmetology theory and practical experience in hair, skin, and nail care. Graduates of the program are eligible to sit for the Florida Licensure in Cosmetology.
This course features the historical background of cosmetology and its evolution process. Discussions include the dress code, makeup, behavior, and attitudes of the future professional. Different specializations and possible job opportunities for future graduates are included in this course.
Case studies pertaining to Florida law and ethical issues will be discussed and explained so the students understand how the law applies to the cosmetology industry. Students also study bacteriology and infection control procedures necessary for the safe practice of cosmetology.Topics include microbiology, practical infection control, sterilization and monitoring, chemical disinfectants, aseptic technique, infectious diseases, OSHA standards, and first aid. Students will receive four (4) hours of HIV/AIDS awareness training. Upon completion, students would be able to understand infectious diseases, disease transmission, infection control procedures, biohazard management, and OSHA standards. In addition, students will learn the basics of hair growth and will practice different techniques to temporarily remove facial and body hair. After a review of the procedures to properly perform temporary hair removal using soft or hard wax and tweezing, students will perform a client consultation with a client in order to review contraindications with them.Students will determine if the client is a candidate for temporary hair removal, and will review pre- and post-care, not only to make the client comfortable, but also to perform the service using proper safety and disinfection rules regarding permanent body and facial hair removal.
They will review different methods of permanent hair removal, such as electrolysis, laser, photo-epilation, and pulse light, This course does not provide hands-on training of permanent hair removal procedures.Students will also study theoretical concepts related to presence of chemicals and electricity in the hair, beauty products and equipment. The focus is on using correct, adequate materials and products. Among the topics to be covered are a description of safe working area, the proper preparation of the client for the procedure, and the performance of the techniques for using the products and equipment. Students will study hair composition, including its structure, growth, distribution, color, and development. Hair loss and other scalp conditions and treatments are also discussed.Students will obtain practical experience on scalp treatment application, according to individual conditions. They will learn different basic hair styling techniques according to hairstyle requirements, as well as the basics of wet styling, finger waves, pin curls, roller curls, comb-out techniques, hair wrapping, blow-dry styling techniques, and safety in thermal hairstyling. Students will continue to practice sterilization and disinfection throughout this course along with practical skills learned in the previous described course.
This course is aimed at haircut development according to the individual’s characteristics.Among other techniques, students will practice elevation and its variable, as well as sectioning, angles, etc., using the proper instruments and equipment.The course features the skin composition, structure, and growth, and students will study skin disorders and diseases along with learning the products recommended for the different skin types.In addition, the course is devoted to learning about skin conditions, as well as facial manipulation and its psychological effects. Students will understand why anatomy and physiology are important to the cosmetologist, and will review the eleven body systems. This course will also include face makeup application techniques according to the occasion, and individual facial characteristics.
The adequate products, instruments, and equipment for artificial eyelashes and eyebrow arching are reviewed and practiced. The student will learn hair coloring theory and mixture procedures to attain changes and special effects in the hair. Sterilization and disinfection will continue to be practiced and reviewed throughout the course and students will apply practical skills learned in the previous two classes described earlier.This course will continue the practice of haircutting, as well as effectively using clippers and trimmers, and the proper sterilization and disinfection of the equipment.Using a razor, texturizing, and understanding other cutting techniques along with applying safety skills while cutting, will be reviewed and practiced. This course will also display the step-by-step chemical process when handling perms, hair relaxation, “reverses,” and hair straightening for different types of hair with the purpose of achieving a transformation of the client.The course will help students to learn to design and apply wigs and hairpieces correctly to the client.Students will be trained and will practice cleaning, cutting, coloring, and styling human and synthetic wigs and hairpieces.Topics include tools, equipment, types of ornamentation, and safety and sanitation procedures.
Students will learn the importance of studying braiding and braid extensions. Demonstrations of braiding will be shown and students will be able to perform and practice multiple braiding techniques.

This course acquaints students with musculoskeletal system of the arm and legs, so that they can perform the correct massages and provide efficient manicures and pedicures. Adequate instruments, safety measures, and timing are emphasized.
