That is was a minor year is easiest to see in the song list, with quite a few songs with relatively few votes making the top 15. Less consensus here about what is great it seems. 6 songs here aren't ranked in the top 15 of the year of the official Acclaimed Music list. A record I believe.

Another record is that no less than 3 of these songs aren't even bubbling under: Third Uncle, The Carpet Crawlers and Starless. Nothing could stop No Woman, No Cry of course. I am a little sad that Joni Mitchell didn't even score in this year, even after getting #1 at the album list. After she failed to get a song in from Blue I thought this was her strongest chance, but no.The album list is less surprising, although I admit to never having heard of the Millie Jackson album.

As usual, everything is in the album top 3000 of AM and only four are not in the top 15.

I wanted to dive a little deeper into Emmylou's catalogue after hearing her duet-album with Mark Knopfler, All The Roadrunning, which I really liked. I looked at reviews on allmusic and decided to go with her debut album - Pieces of the Sky. Unfortunately, the only song I liked on the whole album was Bluebird. I thought the rest of the album was rather plain-sounding and unexciting (boring, if you will).

The lyrics often seemed a little cliche too.So, I ask of you, did I just start off on the wrong foot, or do I not.get. Emmylou?Cheers. I would go with Luxury Liner or Roses in the Snow for the 'early' period country music Emmylou.

I enjoy both of those more than Pieces of the Sky, although i think all of her albums up to Roses in the Snow or Last Date (the first 8 or so) are of roughly equal quality.for the 'new' (i.e. Non-country) Emmylou, try Wrecking Ball and then Red Dirt Girl if you want more.

You might like these more if your first exposure to her was the Knopfler release.i would also check out the two Gram Parsons solo albums. The second one, especially, features her quite prominently as a singing partner, and is both a precursor to and better than her early solo albums.

Click to expand. From what I've read in your post, you don't get Emmylou. Bluebird (Wine) is a dull last place song amongst all the classic Emmylou on that album. You've missed the spirit and quality of Pieces Of The Sky completely. If you continue, I'd buy something from the '90s, the modern Emmylou, because you aren't catching on to the '70s Emmylou that I love so much! On Roadrunner her longtime fans are hearing '70s Emmylou continue her career in new directions, trying new musical partnerships, even new genres. Some of them I like; some I don't; some win awards when I didn't hear why.But her longtime fans all agree that her first 4 albums for Reprise/Warners are stunning, priceless collections.

I'd just leave it alone based on your reaction to Pieces Of The Sky. Only three albums where she wrote/co-wrote all the songs:- The Ballad of Sally Rose- Red Dirt Girl- Stumble Into Graceshe did, however, write/co-write a few scattered songs on other albums throughout career, but by and large, she was an interpreter of others' songs up to the year 2000 or so.Tom in Houston, i wouldn't discourage Saatvik from exploring more based on his initial reaction. The first Emmylou record i heard was Elite Hotel, and i thought it was a total disappointment. I was a big Gram Parsons fan, and Elite Hotel just seemed a bit slick and pedestrian to me. My reaction was not dissimilar to Saatvik's. It took time for Emmylou's '70s records to grow on me.

Of course, i love them now. Give a quick listen to Luxury Liner, Red Dirt Girl and the two GP albums last night courtesy. Didn't like Red Dirt Girl, but on a first listen, I found myself liking Luxury Liner and the two GP albums more than Pieces of the Sky. So there's still hope.sometimes it takes a while for me to start appreciating artists. It took me like 2 years to dig Joni Mitchell. Of course, now I think she's the best. Blame it on my thick skull. Thanks for the suggestions, guys.

I will listen again tonight when I get back from work.
